In Mississauga, men’s health matters – and it’s time we start talking about it. Several factors impact men’s health and understanding them is the first step toward prevention and better well-being.

Each year on December 1st, we come together to commemorate World AIDS Day, a global initiative to raise awareness, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, and remember those we’ve lost to this epidemic. This year’s theme, “Take the rights path: My health, my right!” (unaids.org & World Health Organization), focuses on fostering compassion, education, and action to ensure equitable healthcare and end discrimination. As the ASO for Peel region, Moyo Health & Community Services stands in solidarity with all people affected by and living with HIV/AIDS.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on September 30, is crucial for acknowledging the painful history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

Breastfeeding, or chestfeeding (a term that’s inclusive of all gender identities), is a beautiful and natural way to nourish your baby while building a strong bond. It offers amazing health benefits for both babies and parents—like providing essential nutrients, boosting immunity, and even helping with postpartum recovery. Plus, it creates a unique emotional connection between you and your little one.

In our diverse communities, the experiences and health outcomes of individuals are shaped by multiple, intersecting identities such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, and socioeconomic status. Understanding intersectionality is crucial for providing comprehensive and inclusive health services that meet the unique needs of every community member.

Queer and gender diverse individuals have always existed and been valued in many indigenous cultures around the world, including in North America. These cultures have rich histories and traditions that celebrate and honour individuals who do not conform to dichotomous gender norms.

Pride Month is a time of celebration, reflection, and solidarity for the LGBTQ+community in Canada and around the world. In Canada, we are fortunate to have a strong and vibrant LGBTQ+ community that is able to openly celebrate their identities and history during the month of June.

Last May 17th marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), a significant day dedicated to raising awareness about the discrimination and challenges faced by the 2SLGBTQ+ community worldwide.

A SYMPOSIUM ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: CREATING SUPPORTIVE STRUCTURES COLLABORATIVELY IN ADDRESSING GBV IN PEEL

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, to remember and honour Indigenous children, survivors, and families who were made to experience the horrific residential school system.

Every year in June, the 2SLGBTQ+ community and its allies come together to celebrate Pride Month, a time of love, visibility, and acceptance. Pride events take place around the world, showcasing the vibrant diversity and resilience of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. While these celebrations have achieved remarkable progress, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by the community. In this blog post, we will explore how Pride is celebrated across the globe and shed light on the obstacles that continue to shape the fight for 2SLGBTQ+ rights.

On July 1st, Moyo Health & Community Services acknowledges the importance of reflecting on Canada’s history of colonialism and residential schools. We acknowledge that 10.3% of people living with HIV in Canada are Indigenous, and that Indigenous people are over-represented in new HIV infections in Canada. We reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and anti-racism and we acknowledge our role in fostering dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation. We will work to amplify voices and perspectives of those affected my historical injustices. We commit to taking concrete actions that contribute to positive change.

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that we announce the departure of Hope Ramsay from MOYO, who has been the heart and soul of our organization for many years.

To end off Black History Month we'd like to highlight an incredible individual who has transformed the landscape of Canadian politics and human rights. Rosemary Brown was an accomplished Canadian politician, professor, and social activist. Rosemary was the first Black woman elected to a provincial legislature in Canada and the first Black woman to run for leadership of a major political party in Canada.

This year, the challenges of the pandemic continued to shape our lives and test our resilience, but they also inspired solidarity and collective action. As we bring the year to an end we can’t thank you enough for your continuous support in our endeavor to make the communities we serve, safer and their experiences more meaningful. As we head into the new year let’s continue to spread love and create spaces where we are kind to one another and lift each other up. The Moyo HCS team wishes for you and your loved ones good health, safety, and prosperity this holiday season!

It’s almost self-care day, and judging by the memes, hashtags and rise in sales for bath bombs, we can confidently say that everyone loves a little self-care. It’s giving yourself permission to take some time to relax after that long day’s work, unwind from those problems that keep you tense, and be mindful of the negative and positive thoughts that fill your mind.

For over two decades, our agency has provided a growing array of health promotion, education, social and support services for people living with, affected by, and at systemic risk of HIV. Through collaborative efforts and effective service delivery, we have become the leading HIV/AIDS service provider for Peel’s communities of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. We are excited for the next step in our agency’s evolution as we announce our new name, Moyo Health & Community Services!

The science is in. HIV stigma is out. Science has proven that an HIV-positive person who is taking their medication as prescribed and maintaining an undetectable viral load cannot pass on the HIV virus to their sexual partners. In honour of World AIDS Day this December, PHAN is partnering up with OASIS Centre des femmes to bring you the Red Scarf Project! We will be selling handmade red scarves—a scaled-up version of the red HIV awareness ribbon—to raise awareness about HIV, fight stigma, and support vital health and community service programming.

2018 has been a big year for PHAN! We’ve had a lot of milestones this year, including the launch of important movements, the introduction of a new Executive Director & new Board members, and exciting updates in our programming. We are so lucky to have spent the year growing with our community and appreciate all the support you have given us throughout the year.

World AIDS Day has come to a close, but the movement has not! We’d like to thank everyone who helped us spread the word about Undetectable = Untransmittable in the month leading up to the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day on December 1st, participated in our World AIDS Day social media party, and have continued to share the movement since then. As we wind down from this important event, we want to remind everyone to please keep standing up to HIV stigma and sharing this crucial message throughout the year.
