A Statement of Solidarity with 2SLGBTQ+ Community in recognition and support of June as Pride month and Raising Pride flag

July 16, 2024

Original Statement: Statement of Solidarity (moyohcs.ca)

As staunch advocates for inclusivity, diversity, and equality, the undersigned organizations collectively stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community to emphasize the significance of raising the Pride flag during Pride Month. This solidarity statement letter underscores the importance of this symbolic gesture in advancing acceptance, fostering safe spaces, and striving for equity for all.

Our values and mission statements are deeply rooted in the belief that every individual deserves to live authentically and with dignity, irrespective of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. We are committed to cultivating a culture of respect, understanding, and support for all marginalized groups, including the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

The recent decision by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board to reject the raising of the Pride flag underscores the ongoing struggle for recognition and acceptance faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. By raising the Pride flag, we collectively send a powerful message of solidarity, affirmation, and support to 2SLGBTQ+ individuals within our community.

In our respective regions, 2SLGBTQ+ youth often encounter discrimination, placing them at risk and compromising their health and well-being. The decision to raise Pride flags or implement similar measures is not merely symbolic but a statement of inclusion and safety for these vulnerable youth. Celebrating diversity fosters an environment where young people feel validated, respected, safe and empowered to thrive.

Moreover, raising the Pride flag demonstrates our shared commitment to creating safe and affirming environments for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. It unequivocally communicates that discrimination and prejudice have no place in our community and that everyone has the right to live free from fear of discrimination or violence based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As organizations serving Peel Region dedicated to promoting health and well-being for all members of our communities, we stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and affirm the importance of raising the Pride flag during Pride Month. By visibly demonstrating our support, we contribute to the ongoing fight for equality, acceptance, and social justice.

In conclusion, we collectively reaffirm our commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equality for all members of our communities. We urge all organizations and institutions to join us in raising the Pride flag during Pride Month as a symbol of our collective dedication to building a more just and equitable society.
