World AIDS Day 2024: United in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

December 1, 2024

Each year on December 1st, we come together to commemorate World AIDS Day, a global initiative to raise awareness, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, and remember those we’ve lost to this epidemic. This year’s theme, “Take the rights path: My health, my right!” (unaids.org & World Health Organization), focuses on fostering compassion, education, and action to ensure equitable healthcare and end discrimination. As the ASO for Peel region, Moyo Health & Community Services stands in solidarity with all people affected by and living with HIV/AIDS.

Since its first observance in 1988, World AIDS Day has served as a beacon of hope and progress. Medical advancements like antiretroviral therapy (ART) have transformed HIV from a fatal diagnosis to a manageable condition for millions. Innovations like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have revolutionized prevention, while global initiatives such as UNAIDS’ 95-95-95 targets strive to eliminate the epidemic by ensuring 95% of those living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed are on treatment, and 95% of those treated achieve viral suppression.

Yet, despite these strides, challenges remain. Globally, millions of people live with HIV. These figures underline the importance of sustained awareness and action.

HIV-related stigma continues to be a significant barrier to ending the epidemic. Misconceptions about transmission, judgment surrounding lifestyles, and systemic inequities marginalize many people living with HIV. Stigma not only isolates individuals but can discourage them from seeking testing and treatment, perpetuating the cycle of infection.

Breaking stigma starts with education. HIV cannot be transmitted through casual contact, sharing food, or even kissing. Safe sex practices, harm reduction programs, and equitable access to healthcare are essential tools in prevention. Open, judgment-free conversations are key to creating an environment where everyone feels supported to know their status and seek care.

Here are some ways you can participate in World AIDS Day:

1. Wear a Red Ribbon to show solidarity with PLHIV.

2. Attend a Community Event or vigil in your area

3. Spread Awareness by sharing information and breaking down myths about HIV/AIDS.

4. Get Tested and Know Your Status. Lead by example and encourage others to do the same.

World AIDS Day reminds us of the power of science, compassion, and unity. Together, we can eliminate the stigma surrounding HIV, provide unwavering support to those living with the virus, and work toward a future where AIDS is a thing of the past.
